Nic Manshon

Hi, I’m Nic Manshon. Creativity, for me, started back when I was drawing Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and entering Mother’s Day competitions for KTV. I always loved art as a kid and did it as a subject throughout my schooling career.  If I were to be totally honest, I never saw a career in creativity in high school, even though art was my highest marked subject.  Hence, I went to study personal training straight after high school and thereafter worked for Virgin Active for a while. Soon enough I realized that it wasn’t for me. Nonetheless, I believe nothing is lost with learning. After having these feelings to change my career, I started exploring creativity again. That was a good choice! The journey started out at CPUT, studying industrial design and serving at a local church, heading up the media department. After that, I got a scholarship for digital filmmaking at SAE. I never received a scholarship before so I was super stoked to do the course, not rea

FutureNow - What is your background, where & when did REVOLS start?

Our CEO Daniel Blumer has an MBA and a background in Finance while our CTO Navi Cohen studied Engineering. They have known each other for nearly three decades and have always aspired to create a product and company together. Navi approached Daniel with the idea in 2014 in Montreal, and they quickly began constructing the first pair of molding tips.
FutureNow - What inspired you to design and create REVOLS earphones?

Navi always had an interest in earphones and had a dream of bringing a new technology to the masses. During his undergrad, he had become fascinated with creating a more comfortable and affordable solution to earphones, but ended up dropping the idea for a few years. He then started looking into other products and ideas, but ultimately lead himself back to earphones. He worked in fields that concentrated on plastics, materials and injection molding and after doing some research he came across a process that just clicked! With his engineering background and Daniel’s entrepreneurial spirit, they knew that this was the time to take the risk and jump into it.

FutureNow - What are the pros and cons of creating a product from scratch?

The pros of creating a product from scratch is being able to design it without any limitations. Of course, there are industry standards to abide to, however the co-founders were able to truly imagine their perfect set of earphones and bring it to life. Nevertheless, there are cons that come along with this process as well. Creating innovative hardware takes a lot of time, dedication and funds. Making sure that you align with the right partners is absolutely critical for success. There are so many unforeseen challenges that come up along the way and you need to force yourself to push through them. Two steps forward, one step back…

FutureNow - What does the future hold for REVOLS and what does REVOLS stand for?

We believe that Revols will change the way people listen to music forever. While our roots are in the consumer tech market, we know that there is a real need for our technology in other spaces, for the hearing impaired, military communication devices, aviation, etc. Our intent is to form a solid foundation and then build out from there to be able to create offerings in all other sorts of markets.

Revols stands for two things: Revolution and Evolve. We wanted to change the way people look at earphones; truly evolve them into something new and revolutionize the way they look and feel.

FutureNow - Advice for Creators around the world?

The best advice that we could give to other startups and creators around the world would be to truly believe in your product and company. If you have confidence in it and faith that it will be successful, then it will reach limits that you never deemed possible. Keep working as hard as you can, prepare yourself for the unexpected and always stand out.
