Nic Manshon

Hi, I’m Nic Manshon. Creativity, for me, started back when I was drawing Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and entering Mother’s Day competitions for KTV. I always loved art as a kid and did it as a subject throughout my schooling career.  If I were to be totally honest, I never saw a career in creativity in high school, even though art was my highest marked subject.  Hence, I went to study personal training straight after high school and thereafter worked for Virgin Active for a while. Soon enough I realized that it wasn’t for me. Nonetheless, I believe nothing is lost with learning. After having these feelings to change my career, I started exploring creativity again. That was a good choice! The journey started out at CPUT, studying industrial design and serving at a local church, heading up the media department. After that, I got a scholarship for digital filmmaking at SAE. I never received a scholarship before so I was super stoked to do the course, not rea

Conrad van Breda and Jana Oosthuizen have been making music together in various states of consciousness for 6 years in and around Cape Town. Even after long periods of absence and drama worthy of several TV soaps, they seem to drift together after each break-up, post early 20’s hangover and periods of chronic domesticity to create that which binds them: music.

Jana’s voice is hot and smoky and filled with an early blues tinge best suited – one should think – for rock n’ roll. A voice that has been, on occasion, described as a cross between Janis Joplin and Laurika Rauch. Conrad – problematically – hates all acoustic instruments having given them up for the synthesizer after hearing Ladytron perform in a London club which name would give his age away. For most musicians this divide would be an unsurpassable source of conflict. But not for them…

Language was another non-issue says Jana: “Ons wou nooit in Afrikaans sing nie. Dit was toevallig. Want al is ons Afrikaans hou ons nie noodwendig van Afrikaanse musiek nie. Die bedryf is so eentonig soms. Ons het een van ons songs vertaal uit Engels vir ’n KykNet program en besluit dit werk uitstekend. So nou werk ons in beide tale. ’n Mens moet seker nie jou herkoms ignoreer nie?”

How would one describe their music? Conrad explains: “We wanted to be a proper 80’s Synth Duo, and from that the sound evolved to something of a hybrid. But that’s a silly question. Go listen and decide for yourself, I mean come to a live show. Even if you don’t like the music we’ll dress up and we’ll have weird looking dancers!”

Their debut EP, "Ons S'n Is Beter" was released in October 2016 - all their influences and experiences rolled into a tight ball so you might think it all sounds fresh and utterly original.
